Prepaid Rickshaw Booth Closure at Pune Railway Station Sparks Diwali Travel Troubles for Passengers
Travelers arriving at Pune Railway Station this Diwali season face fresh challenges as the prepaid rickshaw booth, a key solution to fare overcharging, has shut down. The booth, operated by Rickshaw Mitra, provided fair fares and protected commuters from being overcharged, but it was forced to close on Friday evening, leaving passengers vulnerable just as holiday travel peaks.
The prepaid rickshaw service had been a welcome relief for travelers, particularly during festive times when demand for rides is high and unregulated fares soar. For 100 days, the booth offered a regulated fare system that saw nearly 28,000 passengers benefit from reasonable charges, and over a thousand rickshaw drivers registered under the program. However, due to the model code of conduct enforcement, the traffic police did not renew the booth’s contract, leading to its sudden closure.
A Disappointment for Passengers and Honest Rickshaw Drivers
Dr. Keshav Kshirsagar, representing Rickshaw Mitra, voiced frustration with the unexpected shutdown, explaining that the booth's trial phase ended without an option for renewal. He highlighted how the prepaid system helped both passengers and honest rickshaw drivers who adhered to fair fare practices. With the booth’s closure, he fears that drivers who previously exploited passengers may return to old habits, negatively impacting the transport experience for those who rely on fair and transparent pricing.
The figures from the prepaid booth's short run tell a story of success:
- Registered Rickshaw Drivers: 1,211
- Passengers Served: Nearly 28,000
- Total Fares Collected: ₹22,38,764
These numbers underscore the high demand for fair and regulated fare options at Pune Railway Station, which has seen a surge in holiday traffic this Diwali season.
Renewed Complaints of Fare Overcharging Emerge
Following the booth’s shutdown, complaints from passengers about excessive fares have quickly resurfaced. Many travelers report that rickshaw drivers are once again demanding inflated fares, undoing the progress made under the prepaid system. Previously, the prepaid booth helped curb these issues, but with its absence, fare extortion appears to be a growing concern. Commuters have expressed frustration, with some alleging that local authorities are not adequately addressing the situation, despite increased incidents of fare overcharging.
The booth’s shutdown not only disrupts passengers but also raises questions about long-term solutions for fair and regulated transport options. With holiday travel at its peak, many are calling for authorities to reinstate a system that will ensure passengers are not at the mercy of overcharging, especially during high-demand periods like Diwali.
