Delhi-NCR Faces ‘Severe’ Air Pollution as GRAP-3 Measures Return

The air quality in Delhi-NCR has plunged to ‘Severe’ levels, prompting authorities to reinstate Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) starting Thursday. The worsening pollution, coupled with slow wind speeds, has significantly impacted the region’s Air Quality Index (AQI).

Sharp AQI Spike Across Delhi-NCR

Delhi's AQI saw a drastic rise from 276 on Tuesday to 365 on Wednesday, primarily due to smog and stagnant atmospheric conditions. Neighboring cities also recorded concerning AQI levels—Noida reached 317, placing it in the ‘Very Poor’ category, while Gurugram reported 310. Ghaziabad and Faridabad recorded AQIs of 271 and 279, respectively, both falling into the ‘Poor’ category.

Weather Transition and Pollution Concerns

As winter transitions to milder weather, daytime temperatures range between 20-24°C, while nights remain cool at around 12-14°C. Despite a slight easing of the cold spell in the coming days, pollution levels remain a significant concern for residents of Delhi and NCR.

GRAP-3 Restrictions and Preventive Measures

With GRAP-3 back in effect, several measures have been enforced to curb pollution:

  • Construction and demolition activities are temporarily suspended.
  • Non-essential mining operations have been halted.
  • BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles are restricted from operating in Delhi.
  • Commercial vehicle entry into the capital is limited.
  • Schools up to Class 5 in affected areas have been advised to close temporarily.
  • Non-CNG, non-electric, and non-BS-VI diesel interstate buses are restricted.

Rain Expected to Offer Some Relief

According to meteorological forecasts, Delhi-NCR may witness light rainfall in early February, which could help improve air quality while slightly lowering temperatures. This expected rain may also delay the onset of warmer weather, offering temporary respite from pollution.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with actions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III being reviewed to prevent further deterioration in air quality.
