Stampede Chaos at Mahakumbh Mela as PM Modi Monitors Situation and Authorities Urge Caution

A stampede-like situation unfolded at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj during the Mauni Amavasya celebrations at the Mahakumbh Mela, causing panic among thousands of devotees gathered for the sacred event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath multiple times to assess the situation and ensure swift response measures. He has been actively monitoring developments and coordinating relief efforts to restore normalcy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended the Centre’s full support to the UP government.

The incident occurred when a barrier at Sangam Nose collapsed under the pressure of an overwhelming crowd, leading to a chaotic rush. Special Executive Officer of the Kumbh Mela Authority, Akanksha Rana, confirmed that while several people sustained injuries, none were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue operations are underway, and authorities have urged devotees to disperse from the area to prevent further mishaps. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that at least 15 bodies have been taken to the hospital.

In response to the tragedy, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad President Mahant Ravindra Puri announced the cancellation of the Mauni Amavasya bathing rituals. He emphasized that all saints and seers were prepared for the holy dip but chose to withdraw upon hearing about the incident. Mahant Hari Giri, General Secretary of the Akhara Parishad, urged devotees to perform their ritual baths in the Ganga at any available location rather than risking overcrowding at the main site.

The Mahakumbh Mela, known for drawing millions of devotees, witnessed an unprecedented influx of worshippers this year. On Tuesday, an estimated 5 crore people arrived in Prayagraj for the sacred bathing ritual, with the number expected to rise to 10 crore on Wednesday. Given the sheer volume of pilgrims, crowd management remains a significant challenge for authorities.

As investigations continue, officials are working to implement stricter safety measures to prevent further incidents. The administration has assured devotees that every possible step is being taken to maintain order and ensure a safe environment for all participants.
