Air India Launches Advanced Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Training in Bengaluru
Air India is making strides toward enhancing India’s aviation ecosystem by establishing a state-of-the-art Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru. This cutting-edge facility will deliver a comprehensive 2+2 years Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) program, blending theoretical and practical training to produce skilled aviation engineers.
In collaboration with Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), Air India is developing a custom-built facility spanning 86,000 square feet in Bengaluru Airport City. This strategic initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to fostering a robust aviation industry in India and addressing the growing demand for well-trained maintenance professionals.
Scheduled to commence operations by mid-2026, the BMTO will be conveniently located near Air India’s upcoming 12-bay Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru. This proximity offers AME cadets unparalleled access to practical, hands-on experience, an essential component of their training.
The AME program, certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will follow a well-structured format. The first two years will focus on in-class academic coursework, providing students with a strong theoretical foundation. The subsequent two years will be dedicated to on-the-job training at the MRO facility, ensuring cadets gain real-world expertise under the guidance of industry professionals.
While the BMTO facility is under construction, Air India plans to roll out a Cadet AME program in collaboration with reputed institutions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. This interim program will uphold the high training standards expected of Air India engineers and prepare cadets for seamless integration into the BMTO system once it is operational.
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of Aviation Academy at Air India, emphasized the program’s importance in shaping the future of India’s aviation sector. He noted that the BMTO will create a steady pipeline of skilled engineers trained to meet Air India’s rigorous standards. The facility’s proximity to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) further enhances its value, providing cadets with immersive, hands-on learning experiences that mirror real-world scenarios.
This ambitious project by Air India reflects its vision of building a future-ready aviation workforce while contributing to India’s growing prominence in the global aviation industry.
