Late-Night Bus Incident Sparks Outrage as Woman Forced Off at Unsafe Spot
A recent incident involving a female passenger forced to leave a state-run bus at an isolated spot during a late-night journey from Bengaluru to Chennai has ignited public concern over passenger safety and accountability. The disturbing incident highlights ongoing challenges around safe public transport, particularly for women traveling alone at night.
Female Passenger Dropped in Unsafe Area After Dispute with Bus Conductor
The passenger, a teacher from Kozhikode, was traveling to Chennai on a State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) bus when she encountered a conflict with the conductor over payment. When the woman handed over ₹500 for her ₹420 fare, the conductor reportedly insisted she provide exact change, despite her explaining she had none. The exchange became heated, with the conductor allegedly adopting an aggressive tone. He eventually demanded she leave the bus, reportedly telling her to "do whatever you want" in response to her threat of legal action.
As per the passenger's account, the conductor dropped her off at a remote spot, known to be frequented by bus and truck drivers for drinking, creating an unsettling and potentially dangerous situation for the woman.
SETC Responds with Investigation Following Viral Video
After the incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, SETC officials launched an investigation into the conductor’s actions. The video, now viral, shows the confrontation between the conductor and the passenger, raising widespread criticism of the bus crew's conduct. SETC managing director R. Mohan responded, stating that the department is committed to ensuring passengers’ safety and that conductors are instructed to accommodate drop-off requests during night trips. He emphasized that the crew members involved in the incident would face disciplinary action.
Public Safety Concerns and Transport Officials’ Statement
Transport officials have reiterated that conductors on long-distance and overnight routes should make passenger safety a priority, especially during late hours. Officials are considering further training and protocols to ensure passengers, particularly women, are not left in risky or isolated areas.
“We instruct all conductors to exercise basic courtesy and humanity, particularly during nighttime routes,” said an SETC official, addressing the need for reforms to prevent similar incidents.
Growing Public Outcry for Safer Public Transportation
The incident has fueled ongoing concerns over the safety of women in public spaces, particularly in transit. Public reactions have varied from outrage to calls for stricter regulations on passenger drop-offs at night. Social media users and activists are demanding that SETC reinforce training for bus crews on handling nighttime passenger drop-offs and ensure accountability for those failing to meet basic safety standards.
As the investigation unfolds, advocates hope the case will lead to heightened awareness and preventive measures across public transport services. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for consistent safety measures, especially for women traveling during late hours.
