Light Rain Expected in Chennai and Surrounding Areas

Chennai and Suburbs May See Rainfall This Weekend, Says IMD

Days after the northeast monsoon officially ended, Chennai and its surrounding areas could experience a brief spell of rain this weekend. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light showers are expected in the city and nearby regions on Saturday.

Weather Experts Predict Short-Lived Rainfall

Meteorologists suggest that the city may witness two days of sporadic rain before dry conditions set in. Additionally, southern Tamil Nadu is also likely to receive showers due to a trough—a low-pressure system—developing over the southwest Bay of Bengal at an altitude of approximately 0.9 km above sea level.

"There is sufficient moisture in the atmosphere, increasing the chances of light rain, primarily during nighttime. However, after these two days, the weather is expected to remain dry for at least 10 to 15 days," explained N. Senthamarai Kannan, director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD.

Weekend Weather Forecast for Chennai and Tamil Nadu

On Saturday, certain parts of Chennai and its suburbs may experience light rainfall, accompanied by mist or haze in the early morning hours. The maximum temperature is forecasted to reach 32°C, while the minimum could drop to 24°C.

Beyond Chennai, areas in north Tamil Nadu—including Kancheepuram and Vellore—as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, may also witness misty or hazy conditions in the morning. Meanwhile, southern districts such as Pamban, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Madurai, Coimbatore, and the Nilgiris could see occasional showers over the next few days.

January Rainfall Exceeds Average Levels

The extended northeast monsoon brought an unusual 4 cm of rainfall to Chennai in January—72% above the normal average of 2 cm for the month. While the upcoming showers are expected to be brief, they could provide temporary relief before the region enters a prolonged dry phase.
