Doctor Attacked by Student Leader and Associates Over Extortion Refusal
A prominent doctor in Haldwani, Dr. Puneet Kumar, has reported an attack by a student union president and his associates. The incident occurred when Dr. Kumar refused to pay extortion money. The assailants attempted to kidnap and kill him, resulting in a robbery case being registered against the accused under serious charges.
Attack on Dr. Puneet Kumar
On July 5, Dr. Puneet Kumar, a resident of Lohariyasal Malla, informed the police about an incident at his clinic on Mukhani Road. While treating patients, the student leader and his associates barged into his cabin, verbally abused him, and physically assaulted him. They also stole ₹40,000 from his desk drawer, threatened his life, and attempted to flee the hospital. However, they caught him on the road and assaulted him again.
Extortion Demand Linked to Student Union Election
Dr. Kumar revealed that the student union president, Vishal Saini, had demanded money from him during the student union elections, which he had refused. On the day of the incident, Vishal confronted Dr. Kumar, stating that a patient named Sundar, who was admitted on Vishal's recommendation, was being discharged. Vishal claimed the treatment fees covered the extortion money he had previously demanded during the elections.
Impact on Doctor's Reputation and Safety Concerns
Dr. Kumar expressed his fears to the police, citing the political influence of the accused and the threat to his and his family's lives. He mentioned that the viral video of the incident has caused him mental distress and damaged his social reputation. Mukhani Police Station in-charge Pankaj Joshi confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under sections 333, 309(4), 115(2), 352, 351(2), 351(3), and 191(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and efforts are underway to arrest them.
