Government Medical College - Haldwani
Government Medical College, Haldwani (formerly Uttarakhand Forest Hospital Trust Medical College) is a prominent medical institution located in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, India. Established in 1997, the college is affiliated with Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun. Popularly referred to as GMC Haldwani, it is a fast-growing residential and co-educational medical college, recognized by both the Medical Council of India and the Government of India.
History
The foundation stone of GMC Haldwani was laid on 19 March 1997 by Shri Romesh Bhandari, then Governor of Uttar Pradesh. The first batch of 100 MBBS students was admitted in May 2004. On 1 May 2010, the "Uttarakhand Forest Hospital Trust" was dissolved, and the institution was officially taken over by the Department of Medical Education, Government of Uttarakhand, operating under the name Government Medical College, Haldwani.
Admission Process
Admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programs are based on merit through competitive exams:
Undergraduate (MBBS):
Admission is based on NEET scores.
- 15% of seats are filled through the All India Quota.
- 85% of seats are reserved under the State Quota.
Postgraduate (MD/MS):
- 50% of seats are filled via the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination.
- The remaining 50% are filled through a State-level Entrance Exam.

Undergraduate Programs
- MBBS (5½ years):
Includes one year of compulsory rotating internship training.
Structure:- 1st Professional (1 year): Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine.
- 2nd Professional (1.5 years): Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine.
- 3rd Professional Part-I (1 year): Community Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Paediatrics.
- 3rd Professional Part-II (1 year): Advanced Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Postgraduate Programs
- GMC Haldwani is the first postgraduate medical college in Uttarakhand recognized by the Medical Council of India.
- Currently offers 65 PG seats in various specializations.
Campus Facilities
The campus spans 90 acres at Rampur Road, Haldwani, with a well-maintained infrastructure:
- Administrative and teaching blocks, sports complexes, residential complexes, and wide roads.
- Separate boys' and girls' hostels for each academic year, accommodating up to 150 students each.
- An auditorium with a 1,000-person capacity is under construction.

- Established on 26 December 1995 (formally inaugurated on 28 July 1996).
- Currently operates with 600 beds, catering to regional healthcare needs.
Swami Rama Cancer Hospital and Research Center
- Operational since 22 February 2010, envisioned as a State-of-the-Art Cancer Center.
- Currently houses the Radiotherapy Department, with plans for further upgrades.
