Kalu Siddh Temple Relocation Begins in Haldwani to Ease Traffic Congestion

The historic Kalu Siddh Temple, a revered spiritual site at Kaladungi Chauraha in Haldwani, is set to be relocated as part of an ambitious project to widen roads and ease traffic congestion in the city. While the temple itself will move to a nearby site, the sacred Dhuni (holy fire pit) behind the current structure will remain undisturbed, preserving its spiritual significance. On Wednesday, a bhoomi pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) was held to mark the beginning of construction for the new temple.

The decision to relocate the temple comes as Haldwani grapples with growing urban pressures. With the Kaladungi intersection experiencing increasing traffic, city planners identified the need to expand the road to 12 meters, necessitating the removal of structures in its path. The temple, a fixture of the area, became central to these discussions. After much deliberation, it was decided to shift the temple to a vacant plot near the Apna Bazaar area.

The temple committee, alongside civic authorities, has assured devotees that the sanctity of the site will be preserved. The new temple design ensures that the Dhuni will align with the new structure, symbolizing continuity between the old and the new. S.D.M. Paritosh Verma and City Magistrate A.P. Vajpayee, who were present during the ceremony, emphasized the importance of retaining the spiritual and cultural essence of the temple. Construction will begin shortly, followed by the pran pratistha (ritual consecration) of the new temple. Only after these rituals will the old temple structure be dismantled.

The Kalu Siddh Temple holds a special place in the hearts of Haldwani’s residents. For over 200 years, this shrine has been a beacon of spirituality and faith. It is believed that Kalu Siddh Baba, a saint revered for his yogic practices and dedication to community welfare, established a math (hermitage) here during his lifetime.
