Haldwani Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Abetting Wife’s Suicide
In a heartbreaking case of domestic abuse leading to tragedy, a man has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for driving his wife to suicide. The Additional District and Sessions Judge also levied a ₹50,000 fine on the convicted husband.
Case Overview
The incident occurred on September 14, 2022, when Anita, a resident of Shahjahanpur, was discovered dead in her home in Paniyali, Haldwani. Her father, Girind, lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that she had been subjected to continuous harassment by her husband, Anuj, a native of Raudi Kargauna village in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
Dowry Demands and Investigation
According to the complaint, Anuj had persistently demanded a motorcycle and ₹1 lakh in cash as dowry. When Anita’s family failed to meet these demands, the abuse intensified. On the day of the incident, Anuj allegedly killed Anita and staged her death as a suicide by hanging her body.
Following the father’s complaint, authorities registered a case against Anuj under the Dowry Prohibition Act and abetment to suicide charges.
