Bengaluru Set to Get Second Airport as Government Shortlists Three Locations

Bengaluru is set to welcome a second international airport, with the Karnataka government narrowing down the options to three potential sites. The final selection will be made after consultation with the Chief Minister, following which the proposal will be forwarded to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for approval.

Shortlisted Locations Under Review

The proposed sites include Bidadi and Harohalli in Ramanagara district, as well as Solur in Bengaluru Rural district. Notably, Ramanagara is the home district of Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who has been advocating for the airport to be built there. Meanwhile, another proposal for Tumakuru has been put forth by Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, highlighting internal discussions among state officials regarding the ideal location.

Key Infrastructure Plans for the New Airport

According to State Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil, the new airport will be designed to handle an impressive 100 million passengers annually. The project will require approximately 4,500 to 5,000 acres of land, ensuring adequate space for future expansions and supporting infrastructure. Initially, seven locations were under consideration, but the list has now been trimmed to three.

Impact on Real Estate and Urban Development

Experts predict that, much like Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, the upcoming airport will play a crucial role in driving real estate growth in its vicinity. The chosen location is expected to witness a surge in demand for residential and commercial properties, as well as significant infrastructural development, boosting economic activity in the region.

Approval Process and Next Steps

The Civil Aviation Minister recently assured that clearance for Bengaluru’s second airport will be granted once the final site is determined. With discussions ongoing and multiple stakeholders pushing for different locations, the decision is expected to have long-term implications for the city's growth and connectivity.

Stay tuned for updates as Bengaluru moves closer to finalizing this much-anticipated infrastructure project.
