Authorities Remove Encroachments in Haldwani Markets Amid Tensions
In a major crackdown on encroachments, the administration and municipal corporation officials took action across various parts of Haldwani on Friday. The drive to clear illegal structures led to heated exchanges between shopkeepers and municipal staff. Despite resistance, authorities successfully seized several makeshift stalls and roadside setups along with their goods.
Encroachment Removal Drive Led by City Magistrate
Under the leadership of City Magistrate AP Bajpai, the anti-encroachment campaign commenced in Sadar Bazaar and extended through Karhana Bazaar, Meera Marg, Sindhi Chauraha, and Mangla Parav. Officials confiscated unauthorized stalls, carts, and goods placed outside shops, ensuring that footpaths and roads remained accessible. During the operation, approximately two tractor trolleys of seized materials were collected. Some business owners protested, leading to confrontations, but the municipal team proceeded with their task. Using JCB machines, the team dismantled unauthorized extensions and removed plastic covers and counters obstructing public pathways. The drive saw the participation of Assistant Municipal Commissioner Ishwar Singh Rawat, Chief Sanitation Inspector Amol Aswal, and Inspector Chatar Singh, among others.
Community Hall Reclaimed from Unauthorized Occupation
During the same operation, the municipal corporation reclaimed a community hall in Indira Nagar that had been under unauthorized occupation. According to Municipal Commissioner Richa Singh, reports indicated that an individual had been running a tailoring center from the premises. Upon inspection, the hall was found locked, but no tailoring activities were observed. Additionally, handcarts were parked inside. Authorities broke the unauthorized locks, secured the building, and officially reclaimed it. Singh stated that a review of all illegally occupied municipal properties is underway, and necessary actions will be taken to recover them.
Footpaths Cleared, Unauthorized Signboards Seized
On the same day, a joint operation by the municipal corporation and the transport department cleared footpaths from encroachments along Nariman Chowk, Nainital Road, Thandi Sadak, and Workshop Line. More than 100 vehicles parked illegally were issued fines, and over 12 permanent roadside stalls were removed. Additionally, officials confiscated over 100 unauthorized signboards placed along the roads.
The administration has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that public spaces remain free from unauthorized encroachments.
