Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel Ring Road Expansion: AUDA Plans Major Infrastructure Upgrades

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance the Sardar Patel Ring Road, aiming to improve traffic flow and urban connectivity. A key proposal from a recent AUDA board meeting includes expanding the existing four-lane roadway to six lanes, addressing the increasing vehicular load.

Expansion Plan & Project Scope

Currently, the Sardar Patel Ring Road witnesses daily traffic exceeding 100,000 vehicles, necessitating its expansion. The project will be executed in two phases:

Phase 1: A 37-kilometre stretch in the eastern part of Ahmedabad.

Phase 2: A 39.25-kilometre section in the western part of the city.

The estimated cost for this large-scale infrastructure upgrade is approximately ₹2,200 crore. Once the proposal is finalized, the tendering process will commence.

Key Infrastructure Developments

To further enhance traffic management and ease congestion, several additional projects have been proposed:

New Three-Lane Bridges: Additional bridges will be constructed on both sides of the existing Bhat and Kamod Hayat bridges over the Sabarmati River to accommodate increasing traffic volume.

Underpasses for Smoother Traffic Flow: Six-lane underpasses will be developed at Bhat Circle, Chiloda Circle, and Aslali Circle to reduce bottlenecks. Similarly, new two-lane underpasses will be constructed alongside the Tragad underpass.

Pedestrian-Friendly Overbridges: Six foot overbridges will be built to facilitate safe road crossings for residents living in Town Planning (TP) scheme areas along the Ring Road.

This extensive infrastructure development aims to decongest Ahmedabad’s road network, ensuring smoother commutes and improved safety. By enhancing the city’s transportation framework, AUDA’s initiative is set to support the growing population and economic expansion of the region.

With these upgrades, Ahmedabad is poised to experience enhanced traffic efficiency and better road infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a well-connected and rapidly developing urban hub.
