Pimpri Chinchwad Goes High-Tech: GIS-Based Road Management System Launched
In a groundbreaking move to modernize urban infrastructure, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled its GIS-based Road Asset Management System (RAMS). This initiative, a first of its kind for the city, is set to revolutionize road maintenance and management through data-driven decision-making and cutting-edge technology. With urbanization surging and demands on infrastructure growing, this system aims to resolve long-standing inefficiencies and create a more equitable road network for citizens.
Historically, road maintenance in Pimpri Chinchwad has been hindered by fragmented information, lack of centralized data, and subjective repair decisions. These challenges have often led to uneven resource allocation—well-maintained areas receiving repeated attention, while peripheral zones were left neglected. The absence of a unique identification system for roads further compounded these issues, resulting in wasteful expenditures and inconsistent service levels.

According to PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, this system represents a paradigm shift. City Engineer Makarand Nikam lauded RAMS as a strategic investment in the city’s future. He highlighted how the shift from reactive to proactive maintenance extends road longevity, optimizes resource utilization, and improves citizen satisfaction. Post-monsoon surveys, a key component of RAMS, ensure that annual maintenance budgets are allocated effectively based on precise data.
