Tata Motors Opens New Facility to Revolutionize Vehicle Scrapping

As India accelerates its efforts to modernize its automotive ecosystem, the government’s push for vehicle scrapping has gained significant traction. With consumer incentives promoting the phasing out of older vehicles, the stage is set for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. Tata Motors, a pioneer in the automotive industry, has taken a giant leap forward by inaugurating its sixth state-of-the-art vehicle scrapping facility in Pune.

This cutting-edge facility, aptly named Re.Wi.Re – Recycle with Respect, is a testament to Tata Motors’ commitment to eco-conscious practices. Established in collaboration with Tata International, the global trading arm of the Tata Group, the Pune facility boasts an impressive capacity to disassemble up to 21,000 end-of-life vehicles annually. Designed to handle both passenger and commercial vehicles from all brands, the facility employs advanced recycling techniques that prioritize environmental responsibility.

Operating under the umbrella of Tata International Vehicle Applications (TIVA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata International, the Pune facility joins the ranks of five other successful Re.Wi.Re centers in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, and Delhi NCR. Each of these centers operates with cutting-edge technology and follows a fully digital workflow, eliminating paper waste while ensuring maximum efficiency.

The process at these facilities is meticulous and adheres to stringent regulations under India’s national vehicle scrappage policy. Vehicles undergo a comprehensive documentation procedure, ensuring that every step of the dismantling process is legally compliant. From the safe removal of tires, batteries, and fluids to the complete disassembly of components, every action is carried out with precision and care. The facility employs both cell-type and line-type dismantling methods, making it versatile enough to manage a variety of vehicle designs and conditions.

The Re.Wi.Re initiative represents more than just recycling—it is a revolutionary shift towards a circular economy within the automotive industry. By recovering valuable materials and responsibly disposing of waste, these facilities are not only reducing environmental impact but also contributing to India’s sustainability goals.

During the inauguration ceremony, Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "Tata Motors is at the forefront of shaping the future of mobility, focused on partnering with customers to deliver value through our products, services, and digital solutions. Re.Wi.Re reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering a circular economy, employing advanced recycling processes to maximize the value of end-of-life vehicles while aligning with the nation’s vision for a greener future."

The Pune facility stands as a shining example of innovation and responsibility in the automotive sector. As the demand for environmentally sustainable solutions grows, Tata Motors continues to lead the charge, setting a benchmark for others to follow. With facilities like Re.Wi.Re, the company is not just recycling vehicles but also reshaping the narrative around sustainability, making it a cornerstone of India’s automotive revolution.
