Driver's Quick Thinking Prevents Major Tragedy on Almora-Haldwani Highway

On the Almora-Haldwani Highway in Uttarakhand, a potentially catastrophic accident was averted due to the remarkable presence of mind shown by a driver. Near Dopakhi, a KEMU bus carrying 15 passengers narrowly escaped disaster when a reckless overtaking maneuver by a motorcyclist led to a dangerous situation. The driver’s quick reflexes not only saved the lives of those onboard but also prevented a head-on collision with an approaching vehicle.

The incident unfolded when the motorcyclist attempted to overtake the bus on a curve, only to find an oncoming vehicle blocking the path ahead. To avoid hitting the motorcyclist and the other vehicle, the bus driver veered the vehicle towards the roadside. Although the motorcyclist suffered minor injuries, the passengers on the bus were unharmed. Local police from the Khairna outpost promptly reached the spot to assess the situation and ensure traffic flow resumed on the highway.

The bus, en route from Bageshwar to Haldwani, was being driven by Kundan Arya of Ranikhet. Passengers aboard recounted moments of sheer panic as the bus edged dangerously close to the roadside. Thanks to Arya’s timely actions, the vehicle avoided a potentially fatal collision or rollover.

In a similar episode on the Kashipur route the same day, another driver’s alertness saved lives when a state transport bus from Ramnagar depot veered off the road due to the driver’s sudden illness. The bus, which was on its way to Gurugram, crashed into roadside shrubs and a tree in the Halduwa area.

Witnesses described how the driver, Shahid Ali, lost control of the bus after experiencing dizziness. The vehicle came to a halt against a tree, sparing the lives of the passengers. Quick-thinking passersby rushed to the scene to help evacuate the terrified travelers through windows and doors. Only one passenger suffered minor injuries.

Both incidents highlight the critical role of driver vigilance and composure in ensuring passenger safety, especially on the winding, high-risk roads of Uttarakhand. The Almora-Haldwani Highway, known for its sharp turns and heavy traffic, requires exceptional driving skills and caution.
