Massive Gold Seizure in Pune as Maharashtra Assembly Elections Approach

Gold Worth ₹138 Crore Intercepted During Routine Vehicle Inspection

In a significant security operation ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections, Pune Police seized gold valued at ₹138 crore during a routine inspection on the Pune-Satara Road. This incident occurred around 8 a.m. under the jurisdiction of the Sahakar Nagar Police Station, as part of intensified checks intended to maintain heightened security throughout the election period.

A private logistics company’s tempo was flagged down for inspection by special police squads monitoring vehicles across the city. Upon examining the vehicle, officers discovered multiple white sacks containing boxes, one of which revealed the staggering gold haul. Two individuals, including the tempo driver, have been detained for questioning as the investigation unfolds.

Previous Cash Seizure Raises Questions About Election Activities

This recent gold seizure follows a previous incident where Pune Police intercepted ₹5 crore in cash near Khed Shivapur during a similar inspection. The discovery of cash raised suspicions and sparked allegations by opposition leaders that these funds could be linked to election-related activities. With the assembly elections nearing, the frequency of such inspections has increased to ensure compliance with election regulations and prevent unauthorized movement of cash and valuables.

Authorities Actively Involved in Follow-Up Investigation

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2), Smartana Patil, shared more details about the operation, stating, “During the vehicle check, we found boxes containing valuable ornaments in transit from Mumbai to Pune. We have informed both the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission for further investigation into the origin and intended purpose of this gold.” The gold's transportation and its high value have prompted both agencies to scrutinize the case closely, verifying the source and the legality of its intended use.

Enhanced Security Measures in Pune in Light of Upcoming Elections

With state elections imminent, Pune Police have scaled up around-the-clock surveillance measures across the city. In collaboration with election officials, police have mobilized flying squads to carry out intensified vehicle inspections and ensure that strict election compliance is maintained. These steps are part of a larger effort to prevent unauthorized movement of funds and valuables, as well as potential election-related violations.

Election Safety and Transparency a Top Priority

Pune’s law enforcement authorities remain vigilant in their commitment to preserving transparency and security throughout the election period. Through continuous inspection drives and collaboration with investigative agencies, Pune Police aim to maintain a secure environment, upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring compliance with state election laws.
