PMC to Transfer JM Road Parking Lot to Pune Metro for Revamp and Operations
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to transfer the long-unused mechanized parking facility near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Udyan on Jangli Maharaj Road to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). This move aims to address parking issues and optimize space utilization for commuters.
Parking Lot Left Abandoned for Years
Constructed over a decade ago at a cost of ₹2.5 crore, the multi-level parking facility has remained non-operational due to poor maintenance and lack of repairs. Originally assigned to a contractor, the facility was later misused for storing showroom cars linked to a private vehicle business. Upon discovering this, PMC reclaimed the space, but it has remained closed for nearly eight years.
Revenue-Sharing Model for Parking Operations
Under the new agreement, PMC will retain 80% of the revenue generated from the parking facility, while Maha-Metro will receive the remaining 20%. Officials from the project department will submit a detailed proposal to the municipal commissioner to finalize the transfer. Once approved, Pune Metro will take over maintenance and operations, ensuring the facility is functional for public use.
Solving Parking Woes for Metro Commuters
Since Pune Metro's operations began on the Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor in March 2022, inadequate parking facilities have posed a significant challenge for commuters. In response, Pune Metro officials formally requested PMC to hand over the JM Road parking lot in 2022, proposing a revenue-sharing model to make it viable.
A Pune Metro representative confirmed that once all official procedures are completed, they will take charge of the JM Road parking facility, ensuring much-needed parking space for four-wheelers. This initiative is expected to ease congestion around metro stations and provide a structured parking solution for daily commuters.
With the agreement moving forward, the revival of the JM Road parking lot could mark a step toward improving urban mobility and optimizing existing infrastructure for better public convenience.
