Mother of Two in Coma After Brutal Attack Near Sankey Tank, Bengaluru
A 41-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a violent assault in Sadashivanagar on Tuesday evening. The victim, Kirthana Rajath, a mother of two, remains in a coma following a severe head injury inflicted by a known offender.
The attacker, identified as 40-year-old Mallikarjun from Andhra Pradesh, is a daily wage worker with a history of stalking. He was previously out on bail for a related offense under Section 79 of the BNS, according to DCP (Central) Shekhar H Tekkanavar.
Attack Near Sankey Tank
Kirthana's husband, Rajath Ramachandran, a businessman, recounted the horrific incident. Around 7 PM, while she was walking near Sankey Tank with friends, Mallikarjun ambushed her near her parked car on 8th Cross of 8th Main Road. Without warning, he struck her on the head from behind with a wooden log, continuing the assault even after she collapsed.
Bystanders attempted to intervene, but Mallikarjun reportedly threatened them. The poorly lit area, with non-functional streetlights, made the situation even more dangerous. Fortunately, a group of walkers managed to subdue him and handed him over to the police.
Prior Complaints Ignored
According to Rajath, his wife had previously reported the attacker’s inappropriate behavior to local authorities on two occasions. Other women in the area had also filed similar complaints. However, no preventive action was taken against him.
Investigations reveal that Mallikarjun originally intended to target Kirthana’s friend, who had previously lodged a complaint against him. When she failed to appear on both Monday and Tuesday, he turned his aggression toward Kirthana instead.
Critical Condition and Family Impact
Following the attack, Kirthana underwent a five-hour emergency brain surgery at MS Ramaiah Hospital. She remains unconscious, and her condition is critical. In light of the distressing situation, her daughters, who are in Class X and Class VI, have been sent to stay with their grandparents.
Authorities Respond Amid Security Concerns
Despite previous reports of harassment, police action was only initiated after the brutal incident. DCP Tekkanavar confirmed that increased patrolling will be enforced in the area, urging residents to call emergency services at 112 if they need assistance.
Concerned over the safety of walkers, the Sadashivanagar Residents’ Welfare Association has formally requested the Home Minister to implement better security measures at Sankey Tank. Additionally, the association has appealed to BESCOM to restore proper street lighting to enhance public safety.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement against repeat offenders and improved security for public spaces in Bengaluru.
