GBS Outbreak in Maharashtra: First Death Confirmed as Pune Cases Surge Past 100

Maharashtra is grappling with a rising number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, with the state recently recording its first suspected GBS-related death. The alarming surge in cases, particularly in Pune, has sparked concern among health officials as they work to contain the outbreak.

First Death Linked to GBS

The tragic death of a 40-year-old patient in Solapur has raised the stakes in the ongoing health crisis. The patient, who was initially hospitalized with symptoms of diarrhoea, cough, and cold, was admitted to the ICU on January 18. Despite early signs of improvement, his condition worsened, leading to severe breathing difficulties and his eventual passing. An autopsy confirmed GBS as the suspected cause, with further tests pending to provide conclusive results.

GBS Outbreak in Pune

In Pune, the situation is rapidly escalating. The city has now reported 101 GBS cases, with 28 new diagnoses in just the last 24 hours. This sharp increase is highly unusual, as only a handful of cases are typically recorded each month. The outbreak has affected a wide range of individuals, including 16 patients on ventilator support and 19 children under nine years old. Lab tests have identified Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium known to trigger GBS, in many of the cases.

Efforts to Contain the Spread

Local authorities have ramped up their response efforts, particularly in the Sinhgad Road area, which is at the heart of the outbreak. Over 25,000 households have been surveyed to identify potential sources of contamination. Water testing, especially around Khadakwasla Dam, has been prioritized, as high E. coli levels were found in a nearby well.

The Maharashtra Health Department, in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation, is intensifying its surveillance activities to prevent further spread. Additionally, a seven-member team of experts from the Union Health Ministry has been deployed to assist local officials in managing the surge of GBS cases.

Understanding Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the nerves, often following a bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms range from weakness and paralysis to severe complications, with recovery varying from a few months to over a year for some patients.

While the disease is treatable, it often requires costly immunoglobulin injections (IVIG), which can be priced at Rs 20,000 each. To alleviate the financial burden, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar has announced free GBS treatment at government hospitals.
