186-Year-Old President's House in Dehradun Opens to Public in April 2025

Dehradun is all set to showcase a unique slice of its history with the much-awaited opening of the 186-year-old President’s House on Rajpur Road. Come April 2025, visitors will have the exclusive chance to experience this architectural marvel and delve into the rich traditions of the 251-year-old President’s Bodyguard (PBG) regiment. This move reflects a growing effort to bridge historical legacies with public accessibility, making the President’s House more than just a residence—it’s a story waiting to be explored.

Spread across an expansive 21-acre estate, the complex has long been the base for the elite PBG, known for its storied past and unparalleled discipline. Under the leadership of President Droupadi Murmu, a vision was set in motion to open this iconic space to the general public. To ensure the project runs smoothly, senior officials from the President’s Secretariat, including Additional Secretary Dr. Rakesh Gupta, recently held a crucial meeting with Uttarakhand government officials to finalize preparations.

This initiative aims to provide visitors with a holistic experience. Apart from entering the historic main building, guests will have the privilege to explore the meticulously maintained stables and learn about the illustrious history of the PBG regiment. The estate’s picturesque gardens will be open for leisurely strolls, and a thoughtfully curated cafeteria will offer refreshments, ensuring a complete and enriching visit.

To cater to the anticipated influx of visitors, infrastructure upgrades are being prioritized. Provisions for reliable electricity, water supply, and parking facilities are already underway. These enhancements aim to make the experience comfortable while preserving the historical essence of the estate.

The decision to open the President’s House follows a successful precedent set by similar initiatives. The President’s Nilayam in Hyderabad and the Mashobra residence were previously opened to the public, garnering widespread appreciation. However, the Dehradun estate stands out with its unique blend of military heritage, architectural grandeur, and natural beauty.

The high-level meeting to streamline the preparations was attended by prominent officials, including Colonel Amit Berwal, OSD Swati Shahi, and Uttarakhand government representatives such as Shailesh Bagoli and Savin Bansal. Their collective efforts highlight the importance of this project, not just for Dehradun but for India’s cultural and historical preservation.
