Fatal Firecracker Challenge in Bengaluru Ends Diwali Celebration in Tragedy

A dangerous Diwali challenge involving firecrackers turned fatal for a Bengaluru man, leaving the community in shock and sorrow. The incident occurred in Konanakunte, where a group of friends, after celebrating with drinks, dared one another to sit on a cardboard box containing a powerful firecracker for a chance to win a new autorickshaw. Tragically, this high-stakes gamble claimed the life of 32-year-old Sabarish.

The challenge, which escalated from a night of festivity, was captured on CCTV footage that shows Sabarish seated on the box as his friends, gathered around him, lit the fuse and quickly distanced themselves. Moments later, the firecracker exploded, and the impact left Sabarish lying on the ground while his friends rushed back, only to find him gravely injured. Witnesses report that the shockwave of the blast caused serious internal injuries, and despite their attempts to help, Sabarish’s condition proved fatal.

This incident has gone viral on social media, raising concerns about the dangers of impulsive challenges and reckless behavior during festive times. Diwali, a season meant for joy and family gatherings, often sees accidents linked to firecracker mishandling, yet this tragic outcome has underlined how perilous these stunts can be.

Responding to the incident, local authorities quickly detained six individuals involved in the dare. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Bengaluru), Lokesh Jagalasar, confirmed that the suspects have been charged with culpable homicide and were presented in court.
