Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Three Labourers in Pune
A devastating incident unfolded in the Bhosari area of Pimpri Chinchwad township in Pune, as three labourers lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries following the collapse of a makeshift water tank. The tragic event occurred on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the community and highlighting the safety concerns in such labour camps.
The accident took place when several labourers were gathered beneath the water tank, using it for bathing purposes. The structure, not designed for long-term use or high water pressure, gave way, leading to a disaster. According to the police, the wall of the water tank could not withstand the pressure of the water, causing it to burst and collapse. This sudden failure of the structure left the labourers beneath it trapped under heavy debris.
Police and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, but the damage had already been done. While some of the workers were rescued with injuries, three of them unfortunately could not be saved. Additional Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Chinchwad, Vasant Pardeshi, confirmed that the collapse was due to the excessive water pressure which led to the water tank's wall giving way.
This incident brings attention to the often unsafe living and working conditions faced by labourers in many construction sites and camps. Makeshift infrastructure, like temporary water tanks, is commonly used in such environments, but as this incident tragically demonstrates, they can pose serious risks if not properly maintained or constructed.
Pune's labour community has been shaken by this tragic event, calling for better safety measures and infrastructure standards to prevent such accidents in the future. The victims and their families now face the difficult task of recovery, both physically and emotionally, while the local authorities investigate the incident further to understand the exact cause and potential negligence.
